My OTSPSecretSister in Round 4 was quite amazing. “Blaize” (a.k.a. Jamie from Valia’s Page Turner) and I have a lot in common, so we struck up a hearty correspondence during those six months.
She got me this huge brush set, a homemade fleece scarf, a Game of Thrones logic puzzle book and a Classic Logic Puzzles book (I do these at work on my lunch break, to keep me sharp!), two sets of fuzzy purple socks, homemade earrings, and a journal that’s tracking my budgeting. Yay!
March was super exhausting for me, still trying to adjust to my new job, and she kept me bolstered with so many thoughtful, lovely things:
Along with a card with the sweet sentiment of “May all your weeds be wildflowers”, she sent crunchy chickpeas, a Merida FunkoPop I’ve been eyeing for months, a pretty stylus for my Kindle Fire, two sets of green notes/sticky pads, and this gorgeous glass bead necklace/earring set that are just the absolute spirit of Spring. LOVE IT ALL!
April was a rough month for me, especially in terms of health. But my secret sister sent me lovely long letters, rekindling my love of correspondence and making new friends. It’s been eons since I made new friends, really connecting, because it’s so very exhausting for me to socialize these days.
And in addition to this courtesy of acquaintance, she sent me a huge box c-themed goodies (cats and coffee!):
This package arrived right after I’d finished The Cuckoo’s Calling, but having two copies means I can bestow the lovely story on others. Yay! I wonder if she handmade that cat potholder? She handmade the lovely card that came with, a thing she has a passion AND talent for. There’s also ridiculous kitty stickers, kitty fuzzy socks, a framed cat book print, two coffee samples, a whole package of coffee hard candies (YES!), and cat toys.
CAT. TOYS. Now, we buy cat toys every month for Niko and Tika, but usually glittery pompom balls (which they love so much, one of them ate and barfed one up). Our cats have a unique gift for destroying things within minutes.
So I’m very grateful that my secret sister got both a destroyable toy (shown above, which the kitties still play with, despite it being half-gone) and a laser toy that’s as fun for us as it is for them. That mouse has become their favorite toy. Tika drags it everywhere.
Then she surprised me with an ebook after I figured out her non-superhero identity (which took me a MONTH, even with the clues she gave. Very sneaky!)
And look at this! Lookies! Holly Black, Charles de Lint, Ursula K. Le Guin, George R.R. Martin, Anne McCaffrey, Naomi Novik, Roger Zelazny….some of my absolute favorite authors wrote an anthology of dragon stories and I never even heard of it. But Jamie did!
Then in May, she sent this pirate-themed package. You guys, I literally cackled when I opened it.
Gorgeous blue ombre summer scarf, skull and crossbones cookie cutter, Thorn Jack (a retelling of Tam Lin!), Loot card game, chocolate-covered Montmorency cherries (how did you find these? Everybody sells Bing and Rainier and other sweet cherries, but my fav- tart Montmorency- is nearly impossible to find. And in dark chocolate, too! I ate the whole bag myself, in two days. #noshame), Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End flag, Captain America headband (for my everyday cosplay).
June was a real treat: Robin Williams! Gilmore Girls! Handmade earrings! BOOKS! Plus, the opportunity to do a buddy read, since we (of course) share great taste in fiction.
I did not know Robin Williams was a gamer, but I’ve always loved his ribald, goofy, straightforward sense of humor. I’ve never seen RV, but I love Jumanji. Except for the giant prehistoric mosquitos. *shudder*
The earrings are handmade (yay! Totally wore these on Independence Day and will wear them to the polls!) and the bookmark has an inspiring Harry S. Truman quote.
July was so perfect. The end of a round of this secret sister swap is always bittersweet- it’s hard to stop picking up trinkets for your sister, or thinking of the perfect thing to make her. I’m super blessed this time because Jamie is a fan of correspondence, so we can continue writing letters back and forth. Yay!
Anyway, her July package arrived and it was jaw dropping:
I can’t get over this seashell rose. Isn’t is perfect?! I don’t know if she made it, or found it, but it’s so brilliant.
Speaking of brilliant: FOUR books (two from my wishlist, two up my alley), OUaT playing cards (I’m getting quite the collection of playing cards, guys!), limeaide and chai, a gorgeous Brave hair clip (EEEEEEEE!!!), AND LotR Trivial Pursuit, deluxe edition.
Jamie, thank you so much- not just for the gifts, which has been spectacular, and spot-on, and well thought-out, but also for the correspondence and cheer. I wish we lived closer, so we could share our mutual geekdoms over coffee (or Mountain Dew and pizza and D20s). I’m so glad this project introduced me to you!

I’m a coffee-fueled, hobby-addicted bibliophage who makes cruelty-free mineral eye shadows (inspired by novels). I’m usually in front of a screen (writing, reading, or gaming), but I’ve been known to emerge for geekery, good food, and dark chocolate.
