Part of the charm of J.K. Rowling’s world-building throughout the series is the system for wielding magic. It has both a verbal component (which we assume acts as a focus for the mind, as the more talented adults don’t need to use the words), and a physical component (which is nuanced and controlled wand motion).
You’ll realize just HOW nuanced and controlled it is if you buy a wand at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, and attempt to perform all the spells.
Hint: You aren’t conducting the London Philharmonic. Keep your movements small.
Of the 140 spells Rowling references throughout the books, everyone has their favorites. In honor of Harry Potter month, here are my top five…
Tergeo. Imagine cleaning the house with this handy spell! Dusting? Pah. See also: Scourgify.
Reparo. Seriously, the amount of things I (and Fedora) break, this would probably be the most useful spell ever.
Portus. I’ll just be over here, turning everything into a portkey thankyouverymuch. Two-second commute to work (or Disneyland, or Scotland, or New Zealand)? Done.
Expecto Patronum. We all have horrible days- wouldn’t it be fantastic to cast a spell that concentrates all of the positive things inside you, and drives away the predatory dark? Although, to be honest, I have no idea what my patronus would be. Probably a cup of coffee.
Capacious Extremis. I really just want to have the tent used by the Weasley clan at the Quidditch World Cup.
Honorable Mention: Alohomora. Better than a set of lockpicks!
What about you- what are your favorite spells of the series?
I’m a coffee-fueled, hobby-addicted bibliophage who makes cruelty-free mineral eye shadows (inspired by novels). I’m usually in front of a screen (writing, reading, or gaming), but I’ve been known to emerge for geekery, good food, and dark chocolate.
