I LOVED Discord’s Apple. It does a beautiful job of weaving in Greek mythology (without vilifying any deities) into a modern setting with believable characters.
The setting is contemporary, but with a few changes- Homeland Security and the atmosphere post 9/11 has led to a more police state in this case. And honestly, it’s so seamlessly woven together that it’s believable. The micro and macro stories overlap seamlessly, as well, creating a story with depth and breadth.
There’s a story-within-a-story aspect that serves as a wonderful character development tool (and why didn’t I think of that, in my writing?), and the character voices are very true.
I highly recommend this book, for everyone…but especially if you enjoy fiction, adventure, strong female protagonists, Greek mythology, world mythology, history, clever and unexpected moments in novels, and books that are so filled with multiple genres that they can’t be classified as anything other than ‘awesome’.
